Reflecting on Spuntik: Linking the Past, Present, and Future of Educational Reform
A symposium hosted by the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education

October 4, 1997 marked the 40th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union. This event subsequently became a symbol for a period of major curriculum reform in science, mathematics, and engineering education in the United States. To mark this anniversary, the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education hosted a symposium, the purposes of which were to reflect on educational reform during the past 40 years, to inform current efforts to improve science, mathematics, and engineering education, and to build leadership that can sustain contemporary reform and meet the challenges of the future.
