History. IISME was founded in 1985 by a
consortium of 14 San Francisco Bay Area companies in
partnership with the Lawrence
Hall of Science (LHS) at the University of
California, Berkeley. Operated as an LHS program for its
first two years, IISME became an independent 501(c)(3)
nonprofit public benefit corporation in 1987. Until 1995,
IISME retained an office and staff at LHS.
Governance. IISME is governed by a Board of
Directors which meets six times per year. Board members
include industry representatives, IISME Fellows, and
school administrators. A Senior Advisory Council of 8-10
industry and education executives meets once or twice per
year to advise on general strategy, industry trends, new
program development, etc.
Staff. IISME's staff consists of an Executive
Director, Education Director, and four other employees.
All staff work part-time for a total of about 4 full-time
equivalent staff members.
