Examples of Projects

Profiled here are examples of K-12 science education programs where scientists, engineers, and other community members are playing especially effective roles. The goals of the Examples section are
  • to acquaint users with programs illustrating a specified range of roles for scientists, engineers, and institutions
  • to acquaint users with some of the entry points for their involvement in these or similar programs
  • to show users a diversity of promising models for possible replication

This section is not a comprehensive survey of all K-12 science education partnerships. There is more information available about the Selection of Examples.

Example Programs

American Chemical Society -- S - T - P
This large society sponsors many national science education programs, three of which are described here: Project SEED (summer mentoring of high-school students by chemists); Kids & Chemistry (ACS members leading chemistry activities for student groups, ages 9-12); and Operation Chemistry (state-based teams including chemists train science teachers, grades 4-8).
   
Caltech Precollege Science Initiative / Pasadena -- R - U
Pasadena Unified Schools are partnered with Caltech scientists in this broad program centered on systemic reform of elementary-school science education. In addition to Pasadena, 12 other California school districts have entered the program. CAPSI has other programs in professional development, assessment, and curriculum development (at the middle- and high-school levels).
   
Elementary Science Education Partners / Atlanta -- R - U - T- S
 The ESEP consortium of seven Atlanta colleges and universities is partnered with the Atlanta Public Schools to reform the system's K-5 science education program. ESEP provides professional development for APS teachers, recruits and trains science-literate undergraduates to support teachers in classrooms, and involves scientists as mentors to the undergraduates.
 
Hewlett-Packard -- R - I
 This corporation has formed partnerships nationwide with school districts where HP employees live. Their goals include improving elementary science education at the school district level. 
 
Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education -- T - I
 IISME is an organization of more than 85 technology companies, government agencies, and university laboratories in the San Francisco Bay Area providing summer employment opportunities, with mentors, for science teachers in grades 7-14. It is also the lead organization in a loosely structural network of more than 75 SWEPTs (Scientific Work Experience Programs for Teachers) nationwide.
 
Jefferson National Laboratory / BEAMS -- S - I  
Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science (BEAMS) is a program of the U.S. Department of Energy's Jefferson National Accelerator Lab in Newport News, VA. Local 5th and 6th grade classes come into the lab for one full week of educational experiences, primarily in the physical sciences, led by lab personnel.
   
Merck Institute for Science Education -- R - I
This is Merck's 10-year $20-million effort to improve science education in school districts where its facilities are located. The institute's staff and Merck employees build partnerships with the local school districts and support all aspects of systemic reform.
 
Operation Primary Physical Science -- T - U
This national project, has trained 36 three-person teams, each including at least one scientist, to provide content and inquiry-methodology workshops for teachers who teach physical science in grades K to 3.
   
Project ASTRO of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific -- S - P  
This program fosters teacher-astronomer partnerships in which the astronomers work closely in classrooms with grade 4-9 teachers and students and also conduct astronomical demonstrations and activities for the larger community. National expansion is underway at astronomy-related "lead institutions."
 
Retirees Engaged in Science Education through Experiments and Demonstrations (RE-SEED) -- S - U  
This program recruits, trains, and places retired scientists and engineers as "Science Resource Agents" in the classrooms of middle-school physical science teachers. Northeastern University scientists started the program. It has expanded to several New England states and regional sites in Oregon, Colorado, and Georgia.
 
 Science and Health Education Partnership / San Francisco -- R - U
This program at the University of California San Francisco is a partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District. Its K-12 programs are a comprehensive mix of professional development for teachers, curriculum reform; outreach programs on health and gender equity, and classroom resource provision.
 
Teacher-Scientist Alliance Institute of the American Physical Society -- R - P
This national program promotes systemic reform of science education in grades K-6 with the active involvement of scientists. The program provides national lead-scientist institutes, regional leadership institutes for school district teams and local workshops to recruit science and build community support.
   
World in Motion of the Society of Automotive Engineers -- S - P
 This national program is based on instructional materials for grades 4-6 and 7-8 that focus on physical science and design problems. Individual engineers or their employers or local societies form partnerships with teachers or school districts to help students use the materials.
