February 22, 2010 -- Public health officials need to craft policies that support healthier eating, lowered sodium consumption, and increased physical activity to cut the nation's high rate of hypertension, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. Although high blood pressure is relatively easy to prevent and treat, it remains the nation's second leading cause of death, the report says. Physicians can do better at helping patients control their blood pressure, but the biggest difference will come from creating environments that help people avoid the condition in the first place through healthy eating and active living.
