N95 Respirators Recommended for Health Care Workers Treating H1N1 Flu

September 3, 2009 -- Health care workers who interact with patients suspected or confirmed to be infected with novel H1N1 influenza A — commonly known as swine flu — should wear fitted N95 respirators, which filter better than looser medical masks, to help guard against respiratory infection, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. Use of the respirators should be only one element of infection control strategies, however.
