Update of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Public Forum Announcment   ILAR will hold the following open fora in order to solicit public comment and feedback:   October 16: Irvine, CA   November 14: Chicago, IL   *Preregistration is required for attendees and presenters. Please download, complete, and submit the preregistration form (PDF).

ILAR's mission is to evaluate and disseminate information on issues related to the scientific, technological, and ethical use of animals and related biological resources in research, testing, and education. Using the principles of refinement, reduction, and replacement (3Rs) as a foundation, ILAR promotes high-quality science through the humane care and use of animals and the implementation of alternatives. Through the reports of expert committees, the ILAR Journal, web-based resources, and other means of communication, ILAR functions as a component of the National Academies to provide independent, objective advice to the federal government, the international biomedical research community, and the public.

2008 CONFERENCE INFORMATION!

ILAR will held its international conference on September 23-26, 2008 in Washington, DC on Animal Research in a Global Environment: Meeting the Challenges. This meeting brought together members of the international animal research community who engage in or are planning to conduct international collaborative studies. Participants addressed challenges to international research efforts such as differences in regulations or guidelines for the use of animals, quality of training for those who work with animals, quality of veterinary care, and quality of the animals, and outsourcing studies and issues specific to research with mice and nonhuman primates.

Participants will also had an opportunity to interact with members of the Committee to Update the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals during a question and answer session.

The Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) prepares authoritative reports on subjects of importance to the animal care and use community; develops and makes available scientific and technical information on laboratory animals and other biological research resources for:

• the scientific community,
• institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs),
• the federal government,
• science educators and students, and
• the public.
