  • Reusable Elastomeric Respirators in Health Care ... Released: December 06, 2018
    Reusable respirators (specifically, reusable half-facepiece elastomeric respirators) are the standard respiratory protection device used in many industries. Their durability and reusability make them desirable for stockpiling for emergencies, during which large volumes of respirators can be needed. Until now, options for using reusable half-facepiece elastomeric respirators in routine and surge use in health care have not been fully explored.
  • Considerations for the Design of a Systematic Review of Care ... Released: December 05, 2018
    Research on care interventions for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, as well as on interventions aimed at their caregivers, has expanded tremendously in recent years. The National Institute on Aging has initiated a study with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to take stock of the current state of knowledge and inform decision making about which care interventions for individuals with dementia and their caregivers are ready for dissemination and implementation on a broad scale.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder ... Released: November 30, 2018
    On October 30 and 31, 2018, the Committee on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) held a 1.5-day workshop in Washington, DC. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for opioid use disorder, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was created to conduct a study of the evidence base on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
  • Gulf War and Health: Volume 11: Generational Health Effects ... Released: November 28, 2018
    In response to health concerns of Gulf War veterans, Congress in 1998 directed the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to contract with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to evaluate the scientific and medical literature regarding associations between illness and exposure to the toxic agents, environmental and wartime hazards, and preventive medicines and vaccines associated with Gulf War service.

    To explore current developments and opportunities for using mobile technology to advance research and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, the National Academies’ Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted a workshop on June 5–6, 2018.

    This report, Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 11 (2018), presents the committee’s analysis of peer-reviewed, scientific reports published between September 30, 2014, and December 31, 2017, about associations between various health outcomes and exposure to TCDD and other chemicals in the herbicides used in Vietnam. The report also takes into account information from the existing evidence base.

    To address potential gaps in access to these care services, the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health hosted a public workshop on June 27, 2018 that explored disparities in access that exist across different communities (e.g., in medically underserved areas and populations, across different racial/ethnic groups, and socioeconomic levels).

    To explore how public-private partnerships can ease transitions and offer sustainable solutions, the Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety held a workshop, planned by an ad hoc expert committee, on June 13-14, 2018 to examine these transitions and innovative models for sustainable solutions in the current global health context.

    To gain a better understanding of the health communication challenges among older adults and their professional and family caregivers and how those challenges affect the care older adults receive, the Roundtable on Health Literacy convened a 1-day public workshop which explored the effect of low health literacy on the health of older adults.
