Celebrating the Achievements of Charles Darwin
This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his most influential publication, On the Origin of Species, in which he introduced the concept of evolution by natural selection. Darwin's ideas had a profound influence on 19th-century thought, and today evolution is a cornerstone of modern biology.
In anticipation of this year, the National Academies have redesigned its evolution resources Web page, a collection of books, reports, statements, papers, and articles about evolution. This new site organizes materials for groups such as educators and attorneys, but everyone with an interest in these issues should find the site useful and accessible. We also now provide a list of scientific definitions, one of the most requested items from visitors to the Academies' original evolution resources site.
We hope our site will help you understand evolution better and also invite you to join the celebration of science and Darwin's work at one of our events or view a past event in our event archive.
