Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board
Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems
National Research Council
Committee on Space Shuttle Upgrades
STATEMENT OF TASK
The committee will examine NASA’s plans to upgrade the Space Shuttle system. NASA will present a number of scenarios for future Space Shuttle operations. These scenarios may include different Shuttle flight rates, budgets, and phase-out dates for Shuttle operations. For each of these scenarios, NASA will present their planned set of Shuttle upgrades, and the rationale and criteria used to select the upgrades.
The committee will assess NASA’s approach to Shuttle upgrades in two interim reports and one final report.
The first interim report will contain a technical assessment of NASA’s planned portfolio of upgrades for the agency’s baseline scenario and rationale for selecting upgrades. The report may contain recommendations for modifications to NASA’s approach to upgrading the Shuttle for this baseline scenario.
The second interim report will contain a technical assessment of NASA’s planned portfolio of upgrades and rationale for selecting upgrades for the agency’s alternate scenarios for Space Shuttle operations. The report may contain recommendations for modifications to NASA’s approach to upgrading the Shuttle for these alternate scenarios.
The final report will summarize both letter reports and will contain the committee’s independent technical critique of NASA’s overall approach to upgrading the Space Shuttle system.
